Next Wednesday (Nov. 25), Alicia Keys will appear on FOX’s hit TV show Empire. She will play Skye Summers, a pop singer who is affiliated with Jamal (played by Jussie Smollett). In the episode, the two will perform a duet titled “Powerful,” which is an uplifting track about human rights.
“I see a colorful future where skin don’t define any human / And stars are the only thing shooting,” sings Keys.
“Change comes when we all take a stand / Stand up, stand up,” Smollett adds.
In an interview with Essence Magazine, Keys stated, “From women’s rights to gay rights, there’s always an underlying theme. James Baldwin said, ‘Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.'”
“Powerful” is featured on Empire: Original Soundtrack, Season 2 Volume 1, which is available now.
