If you’re anything like us, you still have Kelly Rowland’s new project The Kelly Rowland Edition on repeat. Now, after we’ve learned the lyrics and vocal runs for each song, the Grammy winner is taking us behind-the-scenes at how the project came to be with Red Bull Music Studio Sessions.
According to Benton James, Head of Urban at Red Bull Music Songs, a team of hungry writers and producers were locked in a studio with Rowland for one week to create this three-song masterpiece. Wanting to take sonic directions from the music of today and yesteryear, and merging them together, Rowland challenged the creative hub to lace her with timeless records that kept R&B at the core.
When asked by songwriter Jordan Douglas about the concept blueprint for her new material, Rowland made it clear that the music needs to be number one status since she felt she’s always played “second best.”
Feeling like a weight had been lifted after making that powerful declaration, Rowland went to work in the studio and interacted with each fresh songwriter and producer to involve herself fully in the creative process.
Rowland also shared an in-studio recording of “Don’t You Worry,” a fan-favorite from the EP. One message that stood out in this performance clip was her willingness to trust these rising music tastemakers. This thought-process could be something for veteran artists, like her, to learn from and apply to their future projects.
“Even as an artist to this day, I still feel like I learn and grow from any and everybody that I’m around and you have to allow that to happen. It’s so important to keep yourself open to creativity,” said Rowland in her sit-down interview.
