After releasing her highly-personal debut album, Reflection, Shari Marie peels back another layer in the video for “I Belong To You.”
Directed by Jacob Carlson, the heart-wrenching visual illustrates how Marie’s mother Debbie has to cope with her husband being imprisoned. The video gets even more personal as footage from Debbie’s wedding and Marie’s childhood home videos are shown.
“As soon as I finished the song, all I could picture was my parents’ story,” Marie tells Rated R&B. “My mom even said she felt like the song was written about her and my dad bringing tears to her eyes immediately. It’s extremely raw.”
Despite all the high emotions, Marie revealed filming the video with her mom was “extremely natural.”
“We are often on long drives to see my dad and the message behind it is simple, love is love,” said Marie. “When you truly feel you belong to someone, you’ll stick by their side through the thick and thin, no matter what anyone has to say. So many families are dealing with this type of situation and I had share my story.”
Reflection was executive produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Swagg R’ Celious (Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo, H.E.R.).
