The best feeling in the world for an artist has to be the release of their debut album. After releasing a handful of songs, R&B newcomer Angelica Vila basks in her own fulfilling moment with the arrival of her first album Deception Szn 1.
Issued on Fat Joe’s RNG label through an exclusive partnership with Roc Nation, the 11-track project consists of eight true songs and three interludes.
The latter cuts have titles that allude to the cautionary and guilt context that lies beneath the cinematic dialogues and voicemails. They also do their job at shifting the different moods of the EP.
Vila reimagines two Amerie summer classics for the tracks “Show Me” featuring rising R&B/hip-hop star Ceraadi and “Love Too Hard” featuring Tory Lanez.
On “Next Episode,” which samples Dr. Dre’s Grammy-nominated hit of the same title, Vila seemingly equates a failed relationship to updates in a TV guide.
Samples aside, Deception Szn 1 is a no-filler album that showcases Vila’s distinct vocal style on original production. Songs like the Jacquees-assisted track “Why,” the Cool and Dre-helmed “All I Do Is 4 U” and “Your Plug” with Mariah Angelia and Jenn Morel featuring are evidence of her unique artistry that draws on new-age R&B and her Dominican roots.
