Monica will be crowned as this year’s Lady of Soul at the 2020 Soul Train Awards. The R&B legend is being recognized for her 25 years of tireless contributions to the music industry, including numerous heartfelt love ballads and hood classics that have sustained her place as a cultural lifestyle artist.
Since kicking down the door for R&B in 1995, Monica has released eight studio albums. Miss Thang, her groundbreaking debut, was released 25 years ago and broke barriers for young women her age to create music that was most authentic to them. The LP’s first two singles, “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)” and “Before You Walk Out My Life,” etched her name in the Billboard history books, making her the youngest artist to score back-to-back number one hits on the Hot R&B Singles chart.
In 1998, she released The Boy is Mine and scored three Hot 100 chart leaders. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Monica released additional albums, with 2010’s Still Standing as her strongest to date. It earned Monica her first and only Grammy nomination in the category for Best R&B Album.
The Lady of Soul Award announcement comes at the right time. Monica is prepping for the release of her next album Trenches. The album, slated to arrive in early 2021, will be released independently through her own imprint Mondeenise Music, Inc. Get more details on Trenches, the album, here.
The 2020 Soul Train Music Awards airs live on BET on Sunday, November 29 at 8 p.m. ET.
