A new breakout artist is on the horizon and her name is Alex Mali. She helps lead the pack for women empowerment in the video for her latest single “Fighting Words.” The song is lifted from her brand new EP, Phenom, which is out now.
Mali is one of the three directors (Frank Apollonio, Xtina Prince) for the neon-colored video. In the clip, Mali stands in solidarity with other women as they attempt to dispel the negative stereotypes aimed at Black women on an everyday basis. If anyone needs a reminder of what those inflammatory labels are, Mali does a good job at showcasing them in the writing on their faces. Watch the video above.
Most recently, Mali supplied her growing fanbase with a new song called “5 Star.” She explained to Rated R&B the inspiration behind the song.
“When something is classified as “5 STAR” it’s the epitome of excellence. It’s not just quality, but the entire experience. When I heard the strings on this record, they were so sad, dark and emotional that it made me want to write about someone who wants it all,” Mali said. “The 5 Star chick, the 5 star treatment and luxuries when they know damn well all they do is exhibit behavior that expresses the complete opposite. You don’t reward people who give you the shit end of the stick. They don’t deserve the 5 Star experience, which is you.”
