For those out there feeling Lovesick, the self-proclaimed Love King Raheem DeVaughn, and Detroit producer Apollo Brown have got 12 antidotes on their new joint album.
“If You’re the One” featuring rapper Skyzoo sounds like a Tinder profile, detailing in the chorus the characteristics of an ideal girl that excites him enough to swipe right.
On the pleading “Broken Pieces,” DeVaughn sees himself falling apart if he and his woman call it quits. Before that happens, he’d get on bended knees to beg for her not to leave his side.
DeVaughn clones himself as a “Rick James” not to mimic his famous cadence but to adopt the legend’s teased sexual appetite.
Leading up to the release of Lovesick, the dynamic pair shared a handful of songs like the heartfelt track “When a Man” and the reassuring tune “I Still Love You.”
“I wanted to put together a DELIBERATE sound that set a scene, moved the soul, and tugged the heartstrings, all at the same time; providing an abundance of FEELINGS. It was important for me to produce a cross-genre album that was not only enjoyed by the R&B crowd, but also resonated with MY HIP HOP FANS alike,” wrote Brown on his Instagram handle about producing an entire R&B-oriented album.
Lovesick follows DeVaughn’s What A Time To Be In Love, a collaborative body of work he created alongside The Colleagues. The concept LP made Rated R&B’s best R&B albums of 2020 list.
