Lalah Hathaway and Robert Glasper have finally shared “Show Me Your Soul,” the end credits song from the award-winning, Melissa Haizlip-directed film Mr. SOUL! It made the Best Original Song shortlist at the 2021 Oscars.
On “Show Me Your Soul,” the two frequent collaborators prove why they’re a suitable match, with Hathaway’s multi-layered tone buoyed by the smooth jazz production solidly constructed by Glasper.
Mr. SOUL!, available now on HBO Max, is dedicated to Ellis Haizlip, who produced and hosted the Black variety show SOUL! from 1968 to 1973. It features commentary from Harry Belafonte, Questlove, Nikki Giovanni, and many more.
Earlier this year, Hathaway contributed to “We Will Never Forget” with Omarion and Kierra Sheard. In May 2020, she appeared on Aaron Taylor’s “Don’t Leave Me Alone,” the lead song from his ICARUS album.
This fall, Glasper, who is readying Black Radio 3, is headed back to New York City’s Blue Note Jazz Club for a residency.
In July, he appeared on Leon Bridges’ new album Gold-Diggers Sound.
