Normani is back. The 25-year-old singer has released her new single “Fair,” produced by HARV and co-written by Normani, Felisha King-Harvey, and Abby Keen.
On “Fair,” Normani’s most vulnerable song to date, she sings about the gut-wrenching feeling of moving on from a relationship. While her ex has gone on with life, she picks up the pieces to her broken heart.
She sings on the chorus, “Is it fair that you moved on? / ‘Cause I swear that I haven’t / Is it right that you’ve grown / And I’m still stuck in habits? / ‘Cause I’m finding it strange / That you’re better than average / Hearts didn’t break down the middle / Tell me how did that happen?
In an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, Normani said recording “Fair” was therapeutic.
“It captured me in the moment as I was experiencing. In real-time. I was going through it emotionally that day. I wasn’t sure if I could even really pick myself up to go to the studio. But ended up, and this was a result. And it’s therapy for me. As much as it is for everyone else, it’s for me. It’s really crazy that putting this record out. I didn’t know that it was going to be for me too,” said Normani.
She added, “I’m so proud of how it was written, and the way that we were able to. You could tell this was written by all females, right? We really just poured our hearts out to each other, and we really all went through the same experience. So it was a lot easier for the lyrics to just come out. It was like floodgates. And that’s what we did. It was more so therapy. Girls just pouring their hearts out to each other.”
“Fair” is the follow-up to Normani’s Cardi B-assisted single “Wild Side,” which reached No. 1 on urban radio in November 2021. The song was also certified gold by the RIAA with more than 500,000 equivalent units sold.
