It’s the first day of summer, and what better way to kick off the new season than with some fresh music? Rest assured, Raheem DeVaughn is back with his new EP, The Summer of Love, via New Era Soul Records/DMG.
The Summer of Love is as warm and passionate as the title suggests. The 12-track project, half of which are interludes, opens with “Happy Summer Time,” a nod to DeVaughn’s commitment to incorporating love into all his music since the start of his career.
A computer-generated voice reminds listeners of DeVaughn’s previous albums that include love in their titles: The Love Experience, Love Behind the Melody, The Love & War MasterPeace, A Place Called Loveland, Love Sex Passion, Decade of a Love King, The Love Reunion, What a Time to Be in Love and Lovesick.
The Summer of Love includes the steamy bedroom banger “All Night,” released on his birthday (May 5). On the slippery “Let It Flow,” DeVaughn admires a woman’s love below. “Your p***y like rainfall / Your p***y like a potion / Your p***y like Niagra Falls / P***y wetter than an ocean,” DeVaughn sings in the chorus.
The Summer of Love isn’t just about sex-driven tunes. DeVaughn offers balance in the second half of the project, where he explores the emotional connection in a relationship.
He croons about profound love on “Purpose” and reaffirms it on the closing track “This Is Love,” where he sings about never wanting to let go of that bond. “So hold on tight / Baby don’t let go / This is love,” DeVaughn sings in his signature hair-raising falsetto.
Regarding The Summer of Love, DeVaughn notes, “I want music lovers to be prepared for it to be provocative, grown, sensual and mannish, all while allowing their sexual algorithms to be serenaded by the sounds of the EP.”
DeVaughn’s new project is the follow-up to Love Euphoria, his collaborative project with production team The Colleagues and saxophonist Vandell Andrews.
