Maxine Ashley is not someone to be toyed with. The versatile artist has released “Somebody Else,” a funky farewell that will make you bop your head and tap your feet.
Ashley assures her insecure lover that she is irreplaceable, and finding a replacement for him is easy on this groovy track. She warns him that she is almost out the door due to his lack of appreciation.
“You’re gonna make me f**k somebody else / If you keep on treating me the way you do,” Ashley professes.
Speaking on the new single, Ashley says, “When I wrote ‘Somebody Else’ I was dating. It was like a constant game of cat and mouse: who’s going to text first, who’s going to ignore who the longest. It was so exhausting. I’m a super monogamist and I don’t believe in having multiple partners, so this song is my way of moving on and not getting too attached to one person – especially the wrong person.”
“Somebody Else” arrives with an accompanying video directed by Michael Rainin. It can be watched below.
The new single from Ashley is the first release from JBR Creative Group, led by legendary vocalist Eric Benét. It has not been announced if “Somebody Else” is the lead-up to a new project from Ashley.
At 17, Ashley was signed to Pharrell Williams’ i am OTHER record label after gaining fame from YouTube covers. As part of the label, she released the Mood Swings EP in 2014.
She achieved her greatest success yet by co-writing and being featured on “You Need Me,” a song by South African house DJ and producer Black Coffee.
