Alicia Keys’ critically acclaimed musical, Hell’s Kitchen, is coming to Broadway in spring 2024.

The stageplay, inspired by Keys’ upbringing in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, will begin performances March 28, 2024, at the historic Shubert Theatre. It will officially open April 20.

The 15x Grammy-winning singer announced the news at a recent benefit concert at The Public Theater, where the musical is currently being shown until Jan. 14, 2024.

“I am here to tell y’all tonight that we are beyond ecstatic that Hell’s Kitchen is transferring to Broadway,” Keys told the crowd. “This is crazy because there’s so much love for theater inside of all of us here. And to be able to be a part of creating beautiful, diverse stories about unique perspectives, and to be able to be in the hometown of New York City, talking about a New York City show… I’m really excited.”

The cast for the shows on Broadway has not been announced at this time.

Presale for the shows at Shubert Theatre begins Friday, Dec. 8.

Hell’s Kitchen debuted at Newman Theater at The Public in late October. The coming-of-age musical was written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz, directed by Michael Greif and choreographed by Camille A. Brown. The music and lyrics, of course, are by Keys, while Emmy winner Adam Blackstone is the musical director.

The musical follows a teenage girl, Ali, who is eager to pursue her dreams in New York.

According to the official logline, “Ali’s mother is just as determined to protect her daughter from the same mistakes she made. When Ali falls for a talented young drummer, both mother and daughter must face hard truths about race, defiance, and growing up. Ali feels trapped, until the sound of a neighbor playing piano opens the door to an unexpected friendship and a radically different future.”

In an interview with Playbill, Keys talked about the inspiration behind the musical, which had been in development for over a decade.

“The inspiration has been in existence for over 10 years, which is just crazy to me. I wanted to be able to tell a story about a girl really finding herself, her path,” Keys explained. “And ultimately, it being a love story between a mother and a daughter. And to be able to create the stories that we don’t actually get to see, you know, the very real-life stories that just aren’t often told.”

Keys’ latest announcement comes just days after her sold-out show at Webster Hall in New York City, where she performed her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, in full to honor its 20th anniversary.

On the same day of the show (Dec. 1), she released The Diary of Alicia Keys 20, a deluxe edition of her groundbreaking album that contains nine bonus tracks, including the previously unreleased song “Golden Child.”
