Isaac Hayes’ groundbreaking sophomore album, Hot Buttered Soul, will be reissued on vinyl to commemorate its 55th anniversary.
The small batch reissue will be available on March 1 via Craft Recordings.
According to the company, Hot Buttered Soul will feature “lacquers cut from the original tapes (AAA) by Bernie Grundman and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI with Neotech’s VR900 compound.”
There will only be 3,000 copies pressed worldwide, individually numbered and encased in a foil-stamp, linen-wrapped slipcase.
Additionally, the vinyl will be packaged with in-depth liner notes by writer/journalist A. Scott Galloway.
Hot Buttered Soul was released in the summer of 1969 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in December of that year.
The four-track album, spanning 45 minutes, includes Hayes’ classic reimagination of “Walk on By,” written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach, originally performed by Dionne Warwick.
The song peaked at No. 13 on Billboard’s Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles chart (now called Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs).
Hot Buttered Soul spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B LPs chart (now referred to as Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums). It also peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200.
Before Hayes embarked on his journey as an artist, he was an in-house songwriter and session musician at Stax Records.
He co-wrote hits such as “B-A-B-Y” for Carla Thomas (1966) and “Soul Man” by Sam & Dave. The latter track peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while the former reached No. 14.
Hayes released his debut album, Presenting Isaac Hayes, in 1968.
