Alt-R&B singer Forest Claudette’s new EP, Jupiter, is out of this world.
The four-track offering, out now on Warner Records, includes the previously shared tracks “Kobe Beef” and “Gold.”
Jupiter is a 12-minute meditation on love, life, and identity from Claudette’s perspective as a non-binary artist. “This EP is a summary of my life over the last three years,” Claudette exclusively tells Rated R&B. “It was birthed from the concept that if men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, then maybe I could be from Jupiter. Realizing and then accepting that I am non-binary (they/them) took a long time.”
They add, “It took more time still to feel any sort of belonging or ownership over an identity that could be defined a million different ways. It’s impossible to capture everything. All the revelations, the conversations, learning, the pain of shedding skin. I offer this project as an opportunity to investigate oneself, and to celebrate whatever you find.”
On the closing track, “Big Wigs,” Claudette unpacks some of life’s burdens.
“‘Big Wigs’ is a boiling point I reach every now and again,” they explain. “The sensation of becoming overwhelmed by everything in my life and the questions that follow. What is the purpose of this? What am I trying to accomplish? What are my priorities? It’s about the pressure I feel to honor the privilege of the position that I’m in.”
Jupiter is the follow-up to Claudette’s sophomore EP, Everything Was Green, released June 16, 2023. The six-track offering included the EARTHGANG-featured “Mess Around,” which won Best Soul/R&B Release at the 2023 ARIA Music Awards.
