BET has announced global superstar Usher will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 BET Awards.
The Lifetime Achievement Award “commemorates industry pioneers who have powerfully shifted culture and the entertainment industry.”
He will join past award recipients that include Whitney Houston, James Brown, Prince, Charlie Wilson, Mary J. Blige, and more.
Connie Orlando, BET’s executive vice president of specials, music programming and music strategy, says, “The relationship between BET and USHER spans decades, from his multiple appearances on 106 & Park, to most recently winning the Entertainer of the Year trophy at the 55th NAACP Image Awards.”
Orlando continues, “From his chart-topping hits, electrifying performances, and unforgettable vocals to his signature moves and sound, USHER continues to stand on culture, setting new standards for the music industry and Black Excellence. We look forward to creating an amazing lineup to pay tribute to our global icon.”
A lineup of performers for Usher’s tribute will be announced soon, according to BET.
At this year’s BET Awards, Usher is nominated in four categories, including Album of the Year (Coming Home), Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Best Collaboration (“Good Good” with Summer Walker and 21 Savage), and Video of the Year (“Good Good”).
The 2024 BET Awards airs live Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
Ahead of the BET Awards, Usher will be presented with the Icon Award at Apollo Theater’s Spring Benefit event on June 11 in New York.
“It’s an honor to be receiving this award from such an iconic and historic cultural institution in New York City — one that has hosted and paved the way for so many prominent people,” said Usher. “I’m humbled to be this year’s recipient and look forward to seeing everyone soon.”
Usher, who headlined the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show in February, will embark on his massive Past Present Future Tour in August, with shows scheduled through 2025. The tour is in support of his ninth album, Coming Home, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top R&B Albums chart.
