Skylar Simone isn’t slowing down. After dropping her debut EP, Shiver, this summer, the rising R&B sensation is back with her new single “What’s In It 4 Me,” stylized as “WhatsInIt4Me.”
Produced by Trackside, the radio-ready bop interpolates Busta Rhymes and Mariah Carey‘s 2003 hit “I Know What You Want” featuring Flipmode Squad. Simone’s airy falsetto breezes over a tempting bassline as she requests “reciprocity all up and in and out of these sheets.”
“WhatsInIt4Me” arrives with a video directed by Nick Walker. In the nighttime clip, Simone, clad in a white fur coat, matching blue skirt, and bra top, is seen strutting down a vacant road.
In between cuts, the video shows Simone at a house party where she meets a guy (played by Carson Boatman), who she ends up meeting in a bedroom. While Simone gets ready in the bathroom, the guy quickly sets up a hidden camera to record the action. You’ll have to watch the video to see how it all pans out.
As noted above, “WhatsInIt4Me” is Simone’s first taste of new music since sharing her Shiver EP in August via Def Jam. The project, preceded by the singles “Shiver” and “Shut Up,” included production by D’Mile, Yonatan Watts, Scribz Riley, and Trackside.
Speaking on Shiver, Skylar Simone told Rated R&B, “I wanted people to feel sexy and playful. I wanted to be very real in the delivery, but didn’t want it to feel too forward. Janet [Jackson] did such a great job at being super sexy, but it almost had this innocence to it.”
She continued, “I wanted the music to be like if you strip down what the concepts are saying, it can go a lot deeper, but it doesn’t feel like this huge weight on your shoulders when listening. If anything, it feels more fun and playful. That was kind of the overarching [theme]. It was more of a feeling concept, less so a lyrical concept overall.”
