Chris Brown’s “Residuals” isn’t just heating up the charts; it has also inspired a viral challenge launched by Tank.
Since The R&B General took to Instagram to kick off the “Residuals” challenge on Feb. 7, R&B artists of all sorts have stepped in the booth to record their verse for the heartaching ballad.
“I issue you a challenge in honor of @chrisbrownofficial 11:11 being the best r&b album in the world and “Residuals” being the best r&b song in the world! You up for the challenge? I AM! #ResidualsVerseChallenge” Tank wrote in a caption for a video of his remix.
Since then, legends and veterans — including Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Q Parker of 112, LaTocha Scott of Xscape, RL of Next, Mario, and even the disgraced R. Kelly — have put their spin on the Eric Hudson and Blaq Tuxedo production. (According to ABC 11, Kelly’s attorney confirmed that the recording is “in fact” authentic.)
Meanwhile, Tone Stith, TA Thomas, Vedo, WanMor, Zae France, Trevor Jackson, and Jacob Lattimore repped for the new generation of R&B singers.
On Tuesday (March 11), Brown went to Instagram to express his gratitude for the “Residuals” challenge. “I just wanna take this time to show my thanks and love for everyone who is doing the residuals challenge,” Brown wrote in an Instagram Story. “I’m glad it’s giving people the opportunity to be seen and heard. Real R&B isn’t dead and I thank you for showing me that.”
In the same post, Brown confirmed that he plans to share tour dates in the near future, following a flurry of requests from fans—despite just wrapping up his sold-out 11:11 Tour in August. “And I see y’all in my comments asking about the tour dates…N**** THEY COMING,” he wrote with a laughing emoji.

“Residuals” appears on Brown’s Grammy-winning album 11:11 (Deluxe), which won Best R&B Album at the 67th Grammy Awards in February. At the same ceremony, Brown was nominated for Best R&B Performance (“Residuals”) and Best African Music Performance (“Sensational”).
At the time of this writing, “Residuals” is in its peak position at No. 3 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart.
Elsewhere on Billboard, the RIAA gold-selling single is No. 4 on Hot R&B Songs (No. 3 peak), No. 7 on R&B Digital Song Sales (No. 1 peak), No. 4 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (No. 1 peak) and No. 51 on the Hot 100 (No. 40 peak).
