Tiffany Evans continues to wear her heart on her sleeve, and her latest single, “Hope You Understand Me,” may be her most personal yet.
The velvety, ’90s-coded ballad captures Evans in the throes of unrequited love. “I thought I was the only one you wanted in your world / Hate that I can’t read your mind / ‘Cause all you gotta do is look me in the yes / And you can see that / I don’t wanna give it up.”
Regarding her new single, Evans exclusively tells Rated R&B, “A lot of my life, I’ve dealt with heartbreak in so many different ways. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever felt loved. Writing ‘Hope You Understand Me’ by myself helped me release that pain and break the cycle of hiding behind it.”
She adds, “It’s really not just a song; I look at it as me choosing to be honest, even when it hurts.”
“Hope You Understand Me,” written solely by Evans and produced by Dreek Beatz, is the follow-up to “Would You.” The Jodeci-inspired slow jam, also produced by Dreek Beatz, was released in February.
“‘Would You’ showcases sensual vulnerability to me. I’m not saying that I’m unsure of myself. But sometimes, being reassured by your man does a lot,” Evans explained to Rated R&B. “If I feel like you’re playing with me, there’s some things I need to know and some decisions that need to be made, pronto.”
“Hope You Understand Me” and “Would You” will appear on Evans’ long-awaited EP, coming later this year. It will mark her first project in a decade, following 2015’s All Me. The EP included her Fetty Wap-assisted “On Sight,” plus standouts like “Talk a Good Game” and “T.M.I.”
The “Promise Ring” singer’s next EP will also include her self-written track “Reset,” released in December 2024. “‘Reset’ is for anyone who has ever thought it was too late to start over. This is my personal conviction and message to myself,” Evans shared. “When I wrote ‘Reset,’ I had to look in the mirror and face some of my insecurities head-on. It was a deep but necessary conversation.”
On Oct. 1, Evans will co-headline The Love Scene 25 at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre in Mableton, Georgia, with Kenyon Dixon.
