John Legend returns to his roots with his guest appearance on gospel singer Tasha Cobbs Leonard‘s new song “Church.”

On the Kenneth Leonard Jr.-produced track, Leonard and Legend unlock the power of leaning on their faith — not just inside the sanctuary, but in everyday life.

“God, it’s just / You and me now / Tell me what to do now / Teach me how to have church on a Monday,” Leonard sings. Legend echoes in the third verse, “Now I’m understanding / You’re more than a building / When the service is over / I’ll still be singing.”

“Working with John Legend on ‘Church’ was an incredible experience—his talent, authenticity, and heart made this collaboration so special,” says Leonard.

She continues, “Together, we created a song that captures the essence of finding sacred moments in our everyday lives. It’s an invitation to connect, to heal, and to feel the power of faith and community no matter where you are.”

“Church” appears on Leonard’s debut studio album, TASHA, which was released July 25 via Motown Gospel. The album features additional collaborations with Kirk Franklin, Lecrae, and Chandler Moore.

With gospel at its core, TASHA incorporates a mix of pop, hip-hop, and ’80s R&B. “This album is the truest expression of who I am right now,” says Leonard.

“It’s vulnerable, it’s honest, it’s joyful — and it’s rooted in everything I believe about God meeting us exactly where we are. We didn’t hold back in the writing or the production. Every song is a piece of my journey, and I hope people find their own stories in it too.”

This fall, Tasha Cobbs Leonard will embark on her Whole & Free Tour. The tour will visit Chicago, Brooklyn, Baltimore, Atlanta, Birmingham and more. It will wrap up Nov. 9 at Orpheum Theatre in Memphis. Tickets are available at tashacobbsleonard.com.

As for Legend, “Church” follows his duet with Norah Jones, “Summertime Blue,” released in June.

On Aug. 23, Legend will launch the North American leg of his Get Lifted 20th Anniversary Tour at Ravinia in Chicago.

From there, he will play in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia and Toronto, before concluding Dec. 9 in Oakland. The tour is in celebration of his lauded debut album, Get Lifted, released in 2004.
