R&B veteran Glenn Lewis has released “Past Tense,” his first single in over a decade.

On the Seige Monstracity-produced track, Lewis makes his pitch to a love interest stuck in a loop with someone who lacks commitment. “I think it’s time you should give someone who can / Can show you more and that understands,” he sings.

“Past Tense” is the first offering from Lewis’ third album, which will release later this summer via his independent label, Reimagery Inc.

“This song is an entry point,” Lewis said. “The album goes deeper into emotional maturity that comes with having no choice but to be real with yourself. [It] touches on accountability, growth [and] understanding. It’s not about proving anything. It’s about being honest about where I am now and where I’m not.”

According to press materials, Lewis’ upcoming album was written entirely by him. “It was important for me to sit with my own thoughts this time,” he said. “No filters. No outside narratives. Writing it myself forced me to confront things differently.”

The currently untitled album will follow 2013’s Moment of Truth. In an interview with Rated R&B, Lewis shared the meaning behind the title of the latter album.

“It came from a conversation I had with one of the producers, talking about what this album means to me and what it means in general,” he said. “It’s very personal in nature. Every time I was in the booth, I was leaving everything there. A little part of my heart and soul was left in each song, so it’s a ‘moment of truth,’ so to speak.”

Moment of Truth was the follow-up to Lewis’ lauded debut album, World Outside My Window (2002). The album spawned the hit “Don’t You Forget,” which peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.
