RJtheWeirdo is speaking his truth. On his debut EP, At Least She’s Beautiful, out via EZMNY Records, the alt-R&B singer offers a glimpse of the friction between his personal life and his pursuit as an artist.
As the Dallas native puts it, “At Least She’s Beautiful is me figuring love out in real time. I’m owning my flaws, the insecurities, the avoidance, the ego, and trying to understand why I move the way I do.” He continues, “It’s about being honest with the fear of getting hurt and accepting that you can’t have love without that risk.”
Opening with “I’ll Take Care of You,” RJtheWeirdo assures his woman that he remains devoted to her: “I’ll let water your plants, just let me.” Yet, on the subsequent track, “Tricks Are For Kids,” he groans about feeling suffocated within their relationship. “I know that you think you’ve been holding me down / But you’re slowing me down,” he sings. It’s the sort of tension that shows up throughout the EP.
“The Perfect One,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, holds a mirror to his partner, who is finally getting her taste of accountability. It’s less about pointing fingers and more about being honest enough to know that a relationship can’t thrive behind a facade.
Songs like “Studio Rat” add nuance to the life of an artist who is suspended between ambition for craft and baggage from external forces that try to weigh him down. Whether it’s being accused of cheating for spending hours on end in the studio or dealing with industry politics, RJ opens up about the price paid just to create.
At Least She’s Beautiful also includes the standout title track, plus collaborations with R&B newcomers Nali (“Same Ole Dreams”) and Jaymin (“Loud Silence”).
