To know Inayah is to know she doesn’t really hold back when pouring her truth into music. The singer’s new album, Therapy Wasn’t Enough, out via EMPIRE, gives a raw look at the emotional homework done outside of the session room.
The 11-track offering starts with the wreckage of a relationship and chronicles the onerous journey of restoration. On “WTF,” produced by Sam Hook and Kevin Theodore, Inayah lashes out at her lover for trying to bring their romantic drama to the spotlight. “I’m trying not to lose my composure / In front of people that don’t even know us,” she warns.
By the album’s finale, the Camper-produced “Crazy Too,” she accepts that true love isn’t always a smooth ride while also conceding that she can be just as guilty of the madness. She sings: “You be so out of line / And blinded by your pride / Can’t see the truth for the lie / But who am I to judge you? / When I’m on that same type of time.”
Therapy Wasn’t Enough features additional production by Damon Thomas of The Underdogs, Eric Dawkins, B.A.M., Brody Brown, Kenneth “KP” Paige and DJ Chose.
Speaking on Therapy Wasn’t Enough, Inayah shared, “Therapy is a new leap that I’ve taken over the past two years, which inspired this album. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my life, but it’s not a cure-all.”
She continued, “It provides the tools, but you have to do the work to sustain a relationship. Singing my feelings has always been easier and being able to talk through them helped me reach new heights with this album. I’ve shared my vulnerability and got super personal, letting the girls know it’s okay not to be okay all the time, as long as you’re putting in the effort to heal.”
Therapy Wasn’t Enough is the follow-up to Inayah’s 2024 LP, Wait, There’s More. Regarding the latter project, which included the Fantasia-inspired “For The Streets,” Inayah noted, “It’s about reclaiming my time. It’s confident, fearless, in your face, undeniable and disruptive. There is a song on the album for everyone.”
