Tons of new albums are arriving this summer, and bLAck pARty is adding to the drops. Two years after issuing his sophomore album, Endless Summer, the Arkansas upstart’s third album has an official title and due date. Hummingbird will release on July 14 via Childish Gambino’s Wolf + Rothstein/RCA Records.
Among the album’s undisclosed number of songs is his latest “On My Way,” produced in partnership with Willy Yanez and added input from Beat Butcha.
The steady guitar strums at the track’s opening entice those to listen attentively. bLAck pARty’s voice, which comes on strong at first utterance, is cloaked in distraction and remorse. We’re treated to lyrics that depict the forgetful and self-interested traits women would say men are notorious for when it comes to keeping their word to them.
In bLAck pARty’s case, he’s tied up blowing trees with his homies as time gets ahead of him. He seems to do all get can to head to his particular interest’s place, even though his estimated arrival time is way off target. Maybe the plate of food he keeps hinting at will be in the microwave when he finally makes it.
bLAck pARty shared the backstory of “On My Way,” which he co-wrote alongside his father and Yanez in 2020.
“When working on my album, I brought the song with me into 2022 and we pushed to finalize it with Beat Butcha. The song is very close to my heart, it’s more autobiographical than you would think. I’m always late but it’s important to me that the people I love know that I think of them while they wait for me,” he said.
bLAck pARty paired “On My Way” with a live performance visual, which The Reggies directed.
In May, bLAck pARty dialed in and shared the song “Hotline,” the first taste of new music since releasing a pair of singles last year. Dubbed Birds & Bees, the two-pack included the Gwen Bunn-assisted “Soakin” and the warm “Lay (Season 5 Version),” which he co-produced alongside The Fisticuffs.
bLAck pARty will support Hummingbird at this year’s Format Festival in Bentonville, Arkansas. He performs on Sept. 24, day two of the three-day event. Beach House, The Flaming Lips and Rüfüs Du Sol. Get additional information on tickets and performance lineups here.
