Summer Walker has returned with CLEAR 2: SOFT LIFE EP, the follow-up to 2019’s CLEAR, via LVRN/Interscope Records.
Walker offers her fans a little more with CLEAR 2, giving them nine tracks to enjoy compared to the four-track CLEAR.
While the latter project was featureless, Walker decided to invite others into her creative space. CLEAR 2 includes a feature from Childish Gambino (“New Type”), as well as rapper J. Cole (“To Summer, From Cole”). The closing track, “Agayu’s Revelation,” was produced by Solange, Steve Lacy and John Kirby.
CLEAR 2 includes additional production by Jay Versace (SZA, Tyler, the Creator), who worked on the current focus track “Pull Up.” On the delicate tune, Walker invites a love interest over for a late-night park and ride. “Put your dewy out / Let the window down / Let ’em hear us / I ain’t got no shame with you,” Walker sings.
Regarding her new project, Walker notes, “I wouldn’t call it a continuation of CLEAR, like the first one ’cause the first one was kinda sad… and I’m in a different space, so this one is more like, happy. This [is] just a continuation in the sense of the music ’cause it’s all live.”
Historically, Walker has released EPs in between her album cycles. CLEAR was released ahead of her debut album, Over It, and 2020’s Life On Earth was released before her sophomore album, Still Over It (2021).
CLEAR 2 marks Walker’s first project since her critically-acclaimed second album, which was recently certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for over 500,000 equivalent units.
This month, Walker was presented with more than 30 new RIAA certifications, including the latter award. Some of her other certifications included Over It (2x multi-platinum), Last Day of Summer (gold), “Girls Need Love” (5x multi-platinum) and “Karma” (platinum), to name a few.
The latter track, a standout from Last Day of Summer, has seen a resurgence recently on TikTok, which ultimately was a catalyst behind heavy radio play and streams. At the time of publication, “Karma” is No. 2 at urban radio and has over 86 million streams on Spotify.
