Sekou has unveiled his new single “Let Go of Me Slowly,” produced by Yakob.
The piano ballad is gut-wrenching at its core, as Sekou comes to terms with the end of a relationship.
“Can you promise / Say you remember my name / Say you remember the way it felt to hold me / Even if you won’t please / Tell me must I remember the pain / If that all you leave me with / If you’re letting go please / Let go of me slowly,” Sekou croons.
Speaking on the soul-barring track, Sekou reveals, “This song was inspired by a time in my life when I was going through something, and I didn’t know how to express my feelings about it. It took some time but I went back, I re-read the old texts, and I was finally able to put the words down on paper – I knew I needed to be honest.”
He adds, “It’s freeing – and it’s supposed to be about getting things off your chest and removing that heavy weight from your shoulders that can sometimes still be there after a relationship breaks down.”
“Let Go of Me Slowly” follows Sekou’s heartfelt single “Crying,” which was released in January. He co-wrote the track with the song’s producer, Matt Rist, and singer-songwriter Bibi Bourelly. The latter track has 1.2 million streams and counting on Spotify.
In 2023, Sekou released his soul-stirring debut single, “Better Man,” which has more than 6.7 million streams on Spotify to date. Yakob also produced the ballad, which appears on his first EP, Out of Mind, released in the fall.
Earlier this year, Sekou joined Renée Rapp on the U.K. and European leg of her Snow Hard Feelings Tour.
On May 13, Sekou will perform his One Night Only concert at Omeara London. He will also play at Cross The Tracks Festival on May 26 and Latitude Festival in July.
