Love is full of highs and lows, and Miguel’s new single, “Always Time,” dives into the deep end.

On the bereft, self-penned ballad, Miguel mopes around an acoustic backdrop as he grapples with the aching reality of a failed relationship. He ponders the concept of time and the belief that, with time, there’s an opportunity to redeem himself and things will get better. Unfortunately, the clock has been shattered.

“Broken glass, piercing words / It change so fast, yeah, it hurts / Rocky past, lessons learned / Don’t say it’s too late, I thought there was always time,” he croons in the opening verse.

He continues singing in the chorus, “When you love this hard / And you try this hard / But it’s still not enough / Maybe this time love means / Letting go, letting go, letting go.”

As the song progresses, the acoustic guitar-driven production is accented with cinematic strings, rumbling bass and ghostly ad-libs.

The deeply personal track is accompanied by an official music video. The self-directed visual, which can be watched below, was filmed in one take.

“This may be the most difficult song I’ve ever had to write — for all of the life lessons and experiences that live between each line,” says Miguel. “I’m grateful for the closure it has given me and know it’s the most honest way to begin this chapter of my artistry and relationship with my audience.”

“Always Time,” co-produced by Jeff Bhasker (Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Rihanna) and David Sitek (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Weezer), is Miguel’s first single in over a year.

In 2023, he released two tracks, “Give It To Me” and “Number 9” featuring Lil Yachty. Both songs were said to appear on his long-awaited fifth album, Viscera. Regarding the latter track, he explained that it was “about ending the old, starting new, and the cylindrical nature of change.” At this time, it’s unclear whether those two tracks will be included on his next album.

Earlier this spring, Miguel joined French electronic music duo Justice on “Saturnine” from their album Hyperdrama.

Around the same time, the “Sure Thing” singer earned a platinum certification from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for his appearance on Alicia Keys’ “Show Me Love.” The song has sold over one million equivalent units since its 2019 release.
