In our latest installment of Throwback Thursday, we’re revisiting R&B duets of the ’80s and ’90s.
This week’s duet is Kashif and Meli’sa Morgan‘s “Love Changes,” the title track to Kashif’s 1987 album.
Skip Scarborough wrote the heartwarming song, which was originally recorded by the funk group Mother’s Finest in 1978.
In ‘Love Changes,’ Kashif and Meli’sa exchange powerful vocal riffs as they explore the evolving nature of love from both a man’s and a woman’s perspective.
“Love will make you oh so happy (So happy) inside Inside / Hi, hi, hi (You can’t control it, but it just takes you over) / And love Love will make you (oh so sad) oh so sad, make you cry / Make you cry. (Hi, hi, hi) La, la, la,” they sing.
The remake was a success for the two singers, with ‘Love Changes’ peaking at No. 2 on the R&B chart.
Eighteen years later, “Love Changes” was remade again by Jamie Foxx and Mary J. Blige. Their version was featured on Foxx’s groundbreaking sophomore album, Unpredictable.
Foxx and Bliges scored a nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group at the 49th Grammy Awards in 2007.
