Prepare to break a sweat while listening to bLAck pARty‘s new album, The Last Dance.
The 10-track set is laced with a melange of grooves — stemming from R&B, disco, electronic, reggae, Latin pop and more — that provoke movement. Thematically, the album explores the push and pull of love, with heartbreak pulsating through its core.
Among the album’s highlights is “Sober,” where he sings about how time stops when he’s with his partner. “Time just isn’t real / And I know how I feel,” bLAck pARty sings. He co-wrote the track with his parents, as well as “Moonlight.”
In an interview with Too Much Love Magazine, bLAck pARty explained why “Sober” is the song he has the deepest connection with from the album.
“I’m really into the idea of time travel. The song explores the idea of love traveling through space and time,” he told the publication. “I just feel like the idea of being in love with someone feels like being drunk, and to have to come to terms with the reality that there may not be a happy ending is, well, sobering.”
The Last Dance was preceded by the irresistible singles “Distant Lover” and “Hola Mami.”
Regarding the latter song, bLAck pARty told Flaunt, “‘Hola Mami’ is a homage to Afro-Latin influence in pop music. I always think about the Stevie Wonder song ‘Ngiculela (Es Una Historia)’ and it was always so interesting to me that he made a song where he sings in Spanish, Zulu, and English. I wanted to capture that same feeling.”
The Last Dance follows bLAck pARty’s 2022 album, Hummingbird, which included his Childish Gambino-assisted “I Love You More Than You Know.” The album featured additional appearances from Gwen Bunn, Kari Faux, Jean Deaux and more.
Speaking on Hummingbird, he noted, “The album is a journey about self-love, romantic love and parental love. It represents the evolution of human experience, and I hope the listener finds the full spectrum of emotion from heartbreak to finding self-confidence to sheer joy while listening.”
