Ten years ago from today, Alicia Keys’ “You Don’t Know My Name” was the number one R&B song in the country. The lead single from her sophomore album “The Diary of Alicia Keys” was produced by Kanye West and became an instant hit.
In the song, Keys chronicles her very relatable story of having a crush on a man who doesn’t know she exists; the Chris Robinson directed video featured Mos Def as Keys’ hot on-screen crush.
“You Don’t Know My Name” remained at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs for eight consecutive weeks. Additionally, the impressive track earned Keys a Grammy for Best R&B Song and a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Single for a female in 2005.
The track samples The Main Ingredient’s 1974 hit, “Let Me Prove My Love To You”. The group is best known for their popular song, “Everybody Plays the Fool”.
