Rapper and Houston-native Ingrid Burley opens up about Beyoncé’s “Love Drought,” explaining the meaning behind each line.
As a songwriter signed to Beyoncé’s company Parkwood Entertainment, Ingrid has had her hands in some of Bey’s greatest projects. For the Beyhive, it is known that Ingrid — who grew up with the singer in Houston — has received writing credits on BEYONCÉ and more recently, LEMONADE.
While many speculated that “Love Drought” could be about Beyoncé mending the personal relationship between herself and Jay Z, Ingrid admits that it was actually inspired by her own issues with Parkwood Entertainment.
“Two of the people who were running [Parkwood] at the time had lied to me and told me that Beyoncé wasn’t currently listening to any new music,” Ingrid says.
She later showed up to a writing camp and learned that the A&R’s had lied and read Beyoncé’s notes on new artists. This inspired her to write the song in anger and frustration.
Since that moment, the label has gone through executive changes and Ingrid’s situation seems to be stable now with the release of her single “Flex” with Sevyn Streeter.
