Production duo The Colleagues (Karl “KP” Powell and Harrison Johnson) have engineered themselves a sultry banger with Raheem DeVaughn at the lead. It also features a satisfying appearance from author Rob Hill Sr.
“Belongs 2 You,” the lead single from The Colleagues forthcoming album, is a hypnotic slow jam that relies on 808s to rev up its energy. DeVaughn sustains the momentum though by channeling D’Angelo’s smooth cadences. The lyrical content verges into sappy, but the conviction in DeVaughn’s tone helps the song maintain the grit imposed by the vocals.
Recently, a looming debate has set the R&B fandom ablaze regarding who’s the King of the genre. In a recent interview with Rated R&B, DeVaughn commented, “The real kings are the people that keep our careers thriving — my publicist, my manager, the fans — those are the real kings to me.”
Despite the raging debate, DeVaughn understands his position as a leader in the music industry. He lent his vocals to Bee Boisseau’s motivational song “NFL” with Vandell Andrew and Wes Felton.
