Actress-now-singer Danielle Brooks is starting Black History Month in a major way. The 29-year-old entertainer, known for her role as Taystee in the Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black, has released her debut single titled “Black Woman.”
In this melodic tribute, Brooks breaks down her perspective as a Black woman and how they are perceived in media. In an interview with Buzzfeed she stated, “I decided to write this song without any filters of my journey as a black woman in America.”
Over the solemn pulsating production, Brooks sings on the pre-hook, “You want my thighs / You want my stride but not my melanin / You want my hair / But you don’t care for this complexion.”
As Orange is The New Black comes to an end this year in its seventh season, it gives more time for Brooks to pen more empowering and triumphant anthems. Hopefully, a project is underway.
