Tinashe finds herself alone in a desert in her “Bated Breath” music video. The eight-minute cinematic clip, which takes place in the Mojave Desert in California, was shot by Stephen Garnett and was directed by Tinashe.
While the 22-year-old singer is signed to a major label (RCA Records), she decided to take matters in her own hands to produce the video herself. “I don’t like to sit around waiting for people to do things for me,” she tells W Magazine. “So when I know my label’s not going to produce music videos, I’ll either make them myself or I’ll find people that I think are cool and reach out to them directly. I’m like, ‘F*ck it. I’ll just do it.’”

Her experience creating the video herself wasn’t so pleasant but it was rewarding. “You have to fix your own hair, there’s no catering, and there’s no bathroom,” says Tinashe, “but the challenges became benefits in this case, because they made the video a whole lot grungier. I was incredibly dirty, really dragging myself through the dirt. And it wasn’t like I could shower before I had to drive home.”
“Bated Breathe” is lifted off Tinashe’s debut album, Aquarius, which is in stores now. Catch Tinashe on tour with Iggy Azalea and Nick Jonas starting on April 14.
