This week’s Throwback Thursday song comes from legendary singer Rick James.
One of James’ biggest hits was “Super Freak,” written by James and Alonzo Miller. It featured background vocals by The Temptations. The song was released in 1981 and was featured on James’ #1 album “Street Songs.” The song spent 24 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #16.
“Super Freak” was a popular song and was later sampled by other artists. For instance, MC Hammer sampled the instrumental for his hit song “U Can’t Touch This.” Jay-Z sampled the song in his title track “Kingdom Come.” Furthermore, rapper Gucci Mane also sampled “Super Freak” in his song “Freaky Gurl.”
Here’s an old clip of Rick James performing “Super Freak” in 1982. He was a great performer and will truly be missed. R.I.P. Rick James!
