Check out our recent interview with Roxie Icon where she talks about how she got into the music industry, her new single “Do Me No Favors,” and her “Shameless” mixtape.
Roxie Icon speaks on how it all began….
The name Roxie Icon came from the movie “Chicago” and a friend of mine named Chae Icon who deemed me an icon which just struck. I started singing in a girl group and my best friend noticed that I had something special. As time went along, singing slowly became a passion which then generated my passion for music. Roxie Icon and Susan (my actual name) are two different people. Susan works four to six hours a day at a part-time job, but once I’m home Roxie Icon is working on new music, rehearsing different songs, and trying new arrangements of music. It’s kind of like Hanna Montana.
Roxie talks about musical influences…
I have so many musical influences like Prince, Aerosmith, Madonna, Adele, Justin Beiber, Maroon 5, Micheal Jackson, Tina Turner, Solange, Kelis, Chris Brown, Alicia Keys, Pharrell, Toni Braxton, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce. I am just a huge fan of music.
Roxie dishes on her new single “Do Me No Favors”…
The single was written and produced by Donny Roc. I went in to record it and immediately fell in love with it. For me, “Do Me No Favors” means you don’t have to do me no favors, we can just have fun.
On her “Shameless” mixtape…
The title “Shameless” comes from psalm 34:5, “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.” This is what I want inspire others to feel when they hear the mixtape. It took about six months to come up with the title. The mixtape has tons of things on it that everyone can relate to. I am an artist, a pop artist, a rhythm and blues artist and dance pop artist. I absolutely love dance-pop or anything dealing with pop culture in general, yet a grudge-like attitude. The track off the mixtape that personally stands out to me is “If Love Could Kill” because I have been in love and felt that if love could kill I’d be dead. Donny Roc produced the entire mixtape. No words can express the magnitude of his worth ethic. He gets my vocals and personality better than myself at times. When we work together it’s like we aren’t even working because it’s a great atmosphere to be in. The release date has not been confirmed as of yet but it has been slated for late October.
Roxie explains preparation for “Shameless” mixtape…
I have been preparing all my life to release the project. It comes a lot to deal with now having confidence. I was not always outgoing or fearless. I am in a place in my life that I am comfortable where I am right now. I just thank God for this confidence and helping me figure out what I wanted to do with my life. There wasn’t just one particular issue that project was about, but just life period.
