With his 15th studio album, More Than Words, set to drop on March 19, Brian McKnight drops a new cut called “4th of July.” The mid-tempo track was produced and written by McKnight himself.
“When we kiss, it’s like Christmas/I still feel butterflies/Every time we’re together/Like the 4th of July,” McKnight sings on the pre-chorus.
In a recent interview with Billboard, McKnight revealed that he didn’t create an album that catered to radio:
I kinda went back to that period between ’88 and ’94 where I felt like I was the most creative, without being hindered by powers that be. I was no longer going to try to hinder myself to what I thought was going to be on the radio. I went back and listened to the first three albums I made and tried to figure out what was special about them, why people keep going back to them. I think it was because I didn’t know what I was doing. I had no idea if they were going to play it on the radio or anything. All I did was write songs, so that’s what I got back to.

Although Brian McKnight didn’t think of radio when creating “More Than Words,” we can definitely see “4th of July” taking over Urban Adult Contemporary radio.
