Republic Records singer Ariana Grande just released an R&B tune today fresh off her upcoming debut album, “Yours Truly.”
The 20-year-old singer sounding way above her years, gives a reminiscent Mariah Carey 90s sound with her second single “Baby I.” Grande showcases her vocal range and gives us those high, sweet notes that Carey is known to consistently deliver. The R&B mid-tempo love song relays feelings of being deeply in love to the point of being loss for words.
“When I try to explain it/I be sounding insane,” says Grande more specifically through her lyrics. “The words don’t ever come out right/ I get all tongue tied and twisted/I can’t explain what I’m feeling.”
Grande delivers an aura of a modern day Carey, which shows the potential for her musical career. This doesn’t come as a surprise. Babyface Edmund, who worked with Carey on many projects, produced the summertime track. “Baby I” is the follow-up to the Mac Miller-assisted track “The Way,” which was produced by Harmony Samuels. The diva-in-training has already set-up quite a line-up for her debut album.
