Unlike Lifetime’s Aaliyah biopic, things are moving in a steady direction for the network’s Whitney Houston biopic.
Former “America’s Next Top Model” contestant Yaya DaCosta has been drafted to portray the iconic singer. DaCosta may have the look but she definitely doesn’t have the sound — and that’s okay. R&B singer Deborah Cox has been tapped to provide the “vocal tracks” for the film, E! Online reports.
Cox confirmed reports by posting a photo on Instagram with the caption, “Another amazing day on set!!! #masterclass #angelabassett #whitney #music.”
“Music rights and clearances are still being worked out,” says a Lifetime rep.
In May, it was revealed that the biopic was in the works and Angela Bassett would serve as the director. “I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story,” said Bassett in a statement. “Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”
In early July, Lifetime revealed a sneak peek of DaCosta as she recreated Whitney Houston’s 1987 “Whitney” album cover.
The movie is set to premiere early next year.
