It’s been 14 years since Monifah released her third album, Home. After re-emerging to the spotlight via TV One’s hit reality show R&B Divas: Atlanta for three seasons, Monifah is returning to her music.
The “Touch It” singer has released her new single “The Other Side” as the lead track off her forthcoming album.
“As an artist and not having put out music for 14 years, I felt like it had to be quality, and I had to feel it,” Monifah explains to Rated R&B when asked what made her choose “The Other Side” as the first single.
Monifah says there are “no handcuffs” on her for her fourth album, allowing her to have as much creative freedom as she wants. She further states she’s very pleased with her small team of collaborators.
“I’m working with great producers that I have great synergy with,” she says. “We’re in it together. It feels like a team. It’s creative. Q. Worthy [produced] ‘The Other Side’ and most of the album. Anthony Giles is another producer that I started working with early on. He was a fan. He just believed in me, and we worked together.”
Monifah continues, “I have some incredible music from both of them — that’ll be most of the album. I’m still looking around to see if there’s anything else…doing some writing. Jessica Betts is an independent artist and an awesome writer. We collaborated on writing. I’m just excited. It’s just what I feel. I’m moving with the spirit.”

While there isn’t a set release date for Monifah’s new album, she wants it to be released this fall. “I want to have it out in a timely fashion,” she adds.
While the third season of R&B Divas: Atlanta has come to an end, Monifah says she has become more patient since the first season.
“[I understand] that we are all human beings searching for love and acceptance from each other. It all comes out in different ways. Regardless of how we display it, we’ve got to reel each other in and hold each other up. I’ve opened that up in my life. That’s how I live.”
