Luke James sat down with Rated RnB in Washington, D.C. to give our viewers some insight behind his self-titled debut album.
James released his self-titled debut album on September 23 showcasing his talent to the masses. Before the album was unleashed, James supplied our ears with tunes like “Options,” “Dancing In The Dark” and “Exit Wounds,” giving listeners an idea of what to expect from the well-anticipated album.
Now that “Luke James” has graced store shelves and internet waves our anticipation has been satisfied. Well, almost. Rated R&B wanted to delve deeper behind the album and lyrics and get the album’s true meaning and purpose from the source himself.
“The inspiration behind the collection of songs was honestly just to really, truly show who I am…musically, lyrically, vocally, all the different colors and shades of Luke,” revealed James. “It’s like a prelude…prelude to a book.”
When you give the album a spin and it seems blunt, frank and straightforward, don’t be alarmed, that was the album’s purpose.
“I don’t sugar coat sh**,” says James honestly. “I do music that makes you feel. I take pride in that. People I work with, producers, writers that I collab with, we make sure we do that, that’s mandatory. We have to make sure at the end of the day regardless of what’s going on outside of the room, outside of these four walls we have to feel great about this, whatever the feeling is.”
Inside those “four walls,” James had a great production team that helped craft the album. Producers such as Danja, The Alliance, Kadis & Sean and Luke James himself. With one of those producers, Danja, giving James a Grammy-nominated single entitled “I Want You” (originally from James’ 2011 mixtape “#Luke”), the crooner said he felt no pressure to live up to the single’s success.
“I actually felt relieved,” said the New Orleans native. “It just lets me know that I’m doing the right thing. I don’t need to defer or detour away from what it is I originally wanted to do.”
If you haven’t got your hands on a copy of “Luke James” yet or if you are hesitant to do so, James invites you to come to one of his shows and he will prove that buying the album will be no mistake.
