After much anticipation, Kelela has finally released her first album, Take Me Apart. The 14-track offering takes listeners on a journey through two of Kelela’s past relationships.
Speaking on her inspiration behind Take Me Apart, Kelela said, “Despite it being a personal record, the politics of my identity informs how it sounds and how I choose to articulate my vulnerability and strength. I am a black woman, a second-generation Ethiopian-American, who grew up in the ‘burbs listening to R&B, jazz and Björk. All of it comes out in one way or another.”
Solange, who has collaborated with Kelela in the past, went on Instagram to share her support. “This album is EVERYYTHANG AND so are youuuuu🌹@kelelam *continues to play bluff, sos, and altadena 17,000 times in a row,” she wrote to her 3.1 million followers.
Take Me Apart will follow her 2015 EP Hallucinogen and her 2013 mixtape Cut 4 Me.
