After dropping her “Figures, A Reprise” collaboration with Daniel Caesar, Jessie Reyez returns with a new tune called “Body Count.” On the raw and honest track, the Canadian singer insists men and women should equally be able to embrace their sexuality.
“You don’t gotta tell me ’bout your body count / I don’t gotta know your ex’s name / ‘Cause if it just so happens that you turn around and ask me / I think you might feel some type of way,” she sings in the first verse.
Reyez explained the meaning behind of “Body Count” in a press release. “The luxury of not getting judged for ‘loving’ who you want to love should be given to everyone – including women,” she said. “I feel like so often we’re encouraged to keep our ‘body count’ low, where as men get high fives for a high number; which is cool, do you, but I think the double standard is wack and women should get high fives too lol. I’m not saying go f** the world – I’m saying f** the unfair judgment.”
Reyez will kick off her international festival run on May 5 at the Flyover Festival. She will hit other festivals including Bonnaroo Music Festival, Common Ground Festival and Lollapalooza. Reyez is will also join Halsey’s tour as a special guest on July 11.
