Janet Jackson will need to buy a new trophy case soon. Broadcast Music, Inc. has announced Ms.Jackson will be crowned as a BMI Icon at the 2018 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards.
“As one of the most influential entertainers of all time, Janet Jackson’s artistry and music transcends generations and has inspired many with messages of empowerment that can be heard throughout her rich catalog of music,” said BMI Vice President Creative Catherine Brewton. “She is the definition of an icon, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.”
The award, which celebrates “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers,” has been bestowed to Patti LaBelle, Nile Rodgers, James Brown, Snoop Dogg and Al Green among others in previous years.
Jackson received her first Icon Award of the year at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, where she also performed a medley of hits.
Jackson will be booked and busy this summer. She is set to headline the ESSENCE Festival this Sunday, July 8. From there, she will perform at 11 more stops of her State of the World Tour. She will also take the stage at the Panorama Festival and Outside Lands.
The 2018 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards will take place on Thursday, August 30 at The Woodruff Arts Center’s Symphony Hall in Atlanta.
