Lalah Hathaway brought her unmatched vocals to the NPR office for its Tiny Desk series.
Backed by a small band — Lynnette Williams (keys); Eric Smith (bass); Varo Johnson (drums) — the legacy artist kicked off her set with her saucy track “Change Ya Life” off her honestly good album.
The songstress transitioned into “Boston,” which is an ode to her second home.
Hathaway ended her 11-minute set with the title track of her newly updated album. Interestingly, she reveals the set-closing title track isn’t a kiss-off song; it’s actually lyrically motivated by her “feelings about [her] country at this time.”
In June, Hathaway released the deluxe version of her album, honestly featuring Redman, Robert Glasper, Teddy Riley and The Twilite Tone. She also shared a short film to complement the new music.
