Legendary singer Aretha Franklin is reportedly “gravely ill” in a Detroit hospital, with family and friends by her side.
Detroit news anchor Evrod Cassimy confirmed the news on Monday morning. “I am so saddened to report that the Queen of Soul and my good friend, Aretha Franklin is gravely ill,” he tweeted. “I spoke with her family members this morning. She is asking for your prayers at this time. I’ll have more details as I’m allowed to release.”
Earlier this year, Franklin canceled her upcoming tour dates – including a headlining performance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival — per her doctor’s recommendation.
“Aretha Franklin has been ordered by her doctor to stay off the road and rest completely for at least the next two months,” Franklin’s management wrote in a statement. “She is extremely disappointed she cannot perform at this year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival as she had expected and hoped to.”
