Today, Macy Gray shines bright with the release of her tenth studio album, Ruby. The album follows 2016’s Stripped jazz covers album.
Co-produced by Tommy Park Lumpkin, the 12-track project is worthy of a full listen. She opens Ruby with a guitar solo from renowned musician Gary Clark Jr. (“Buddha”) and finishes it with night time Island vibes (“Witness”).
Ruby also includes “Sugar Daddy,” the album’s lead single, and “White Man,” her message to an “orange figurine” a.k.a. our current POTUS.
“Sonically, it is beautiful,” Gray said to Billboard about Ruby. “It has all sorts of [fusions]. There are a lot of live instruments. We mixed it with samples. We had a ball. But, it is very different. At the same time, it is excellent ear candy. It is actually very pop. Still, it is gritty and grimy and dirty. [The record] will be super R&B. You know, with my stuff, there is always a jazz element. That is what I grew up on. I can’t wait for everybody to hear it. I love it.”
