Have you ever wondered what could have happened if certain people didn’t make certain decisions? On India.Arie’s new track “What If,” the Grammy-winning singer thinks about where the world would be if prominent civil rights activists like Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and Malcolm X didn’t fight against racial inequality.
“What if Martin didn’t stand up? / What if Rosa didn’t sit down? / What if Malcolm didn’t man up? / Where would we be now?” she sings. “We can change the world with our love.”
Along with the song release, Arie also debuted an accompanying visual. The black-and-white clip opens with footage of Martin Luther King, Jr. before transitioning to modern footage of a diverse group of people continuing the fight for equality.
“What If” is the second offering from India.Arie’s upcoming album, Worthy, which is set to release on February 15. It follows her uplifting track “That Magic,” which was released last fall.
