Shanice is back in the lab brewing more powerful anthems. The R&B veteran has returned with her new single “He Won’t,” an energetic track that features her renowned vocal acrobatics alongside an infectious drum melody.
“He Won’t” does a great job at offering something for more contemporary R&B fans while staying true to what Shanice is famed for. It’s always rewarding to see seasoned artists acclimate themselves to an ever-changing musical climate. The lyrical content of the song reflects the playful addiction the protagonist’s significant other has for her. Additionally, the track offers whimsical allusions to sex and provides a chance for the three-decade-long artist to flex her pen.
This effort marks three years since the songbird last released any new music. In 2016, she dropped the soul-stirring “Breakdown” that was a more somber affair. She hasn’t released a full-length album since her 2006, Every Women Dreams.
With Chris Brown recently flipping Shanice’s 1991 hit, “I Love Your Smile” in his new single “Undecided,” it seems as though an opening has been made for the songstress to re-emerge in the music business — especially in a time where people love to ride the nostalgia wave of ’90s records.
