Emerging Nigerian-Canadian artist TOBi takes a surreal approach for his “Sweet Poison” music video. The high-art visual was directed by Ryan Charles Griffin.
“My vision for this video was to turn my ideas into literal art pieces and bring out magical elements similar to my favorite surrealist artists,” TOBi explained in a statement. “I try to be multidimensional and bridge the world of fantasy with reality to defy the limits.”
The concept of “Sweet Poison” was inspired by Sigmund Freud’s (also known as The Father of Psychoanalysis) repetition compulsion theory, which is a defense mechanism where a person endlessly repeats traumatic events that happened in their early years.
In TOBi’s case, he finds himself falling for the same kind of person in relationships and being excited by the danger of the unknown.
“Sweet Poison” is the follow-up to TOBi’s debut single “City Blues,” a socially-conscious record that is an ode to Marvin Gaye’s classic track “Inner City Blues.”
