Listen up. DAWN has released two new songs that we didn’t know we needed until we got them.
“In My Feelings” is an intense, emotional composition that has left DAWN teary-eyed about the downfall of a dying relationship. The sonorous bass in the background reinforces her beautifully-pained vocals.
DAWN switches up her pitch on “Forget About Me | Visions,” a double-edge record that she vocalizes in a computerized singing-style. The filtered, metallic synths on the instrumental are not the main attraction. Instead, her emotionless tone about parting ways with her soon-to-be-ex is most chilling. For the B-side of the track, DAWN cuts-and-pastes the lyric “I got visions” to amplify her future dreams.
“In My Feelings” and “Forget About Me | Visions” are the first hand-offs of solo material from DAWN since her New Breed album, which dropped earlier this year.
“I found myself having a bigger voice. I always knew who I wanted to be, which is why I was hurt when I did my first two albums — Armon On and Goldenheart – and people thought it wasn’t genuine,” DAWN told Rated R&B in March about writing songs for her latest album.
“I was hurt that my culture didn’t embrace what I was trying to do. I was so excited to share who I really was with the world. I wanted to push Black culture forward and the things that I knew that we weren’t being represented in. I think with this album I found myself reflecting on all the times that I’ve had to be pushed into boxes. It made me reflect on the fact that it’s not about people accepting you, it’s about self-acceptance.”
In June, DAWN was credited as the brainchild behind Danity Kane’s latest summer jam “Neon Lights.”
